Top results for this search are mostly directories such as WhatClinic and Bookimed, plus clinic landing pages that state a price or a treatment length without saying where the figure comes from (checked October 2026). Published research on duration, risks and retention comes first below, followed by a look at how Cairo listings differ on price.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

A 2020 systematic review states that treatment with fixed appliances lasts about 24.9 months on average. The NHS gives a shorter range for its own patients: braces usually stay in place for 1 to 2 years, with adjustment visits every 6 to 8 weeks. That interval means roughly six to nine adjustment visits a year, so a clinic's distance from your home or work matters as much as its fee.

Age changes less than most people expect. A meta-analysis comparing adolescents and adults found no significant difference in the duration of comprehensive treatment with fixed appliances (a pooled difference of -0.8 months), although its authors rate their confidence in that estimate as low. One exception: aligning palatally displaced canines took about 3.8 months longer in adults, in the single study that measured it. Adult patients should read the review as encouraging, not as a promise for their own teeth.

Cairo clinics rarely publish a timeline. Al Riad Dental Clinic's Cairo page says only that duration depends on case complexity, and a Heliopolis guide by Dr. Mohamed Asfour says no single duration suits every case. El Qady Dental Center in Alexandria states 12 to 24 months, and Bookimed quotes Vienna Dental Clinic at about 6 to 9 months for clear aligners, which is a clinic claim and not independent evidence. A case-specific estimate from your own orthodontist is the only figure worth planning around.

Orthodontic Treatment in Cairo: What Listed Prices Show

WhatClinic, a directory, lists 134 braces clinics and 89 orthodontist clinics in Cairo. Any braces price in Cairo needs context, because the listings for fixed braces disagree by a factor of ten (WhatClinic listings, checked October 2026):

Clinic Service listed Listed price (EGP)
The Teeth Movers Fixed braces 6,000–25,000
Berlin Dental Center Adult braces 30,000–35,000
Hegazy Dental Clinic Braces 40,000–60,000
Asnan KB Dental Fixed braces 45,000–65,000
Asnan KB Dental Invisalign 45,000–95,000

None of the listings explains the gap, and directory prices carry no breakdown of what the fee covers. Until two quotes cover the same items, the headline fee says little about which one is cheaper. Before comparing, ask each clinic to confirm in writing:

  • whether records (X-rays, scans, photographs) and the treatment plan are included;
  • how many adjustment visits the fee covers, and what an extra or replacement visit costs;
  • which retainer is supplied, and what a replacement costs;
  • whether extractions or other preparatory work are priced separately;
  • how long follow-up lasts after the braces come off.

Consultations are priced separately: WhatClinic shows orthodontist consultations from about 478 EGP, Berlin Dental Center from 500 EGP and Dentalica Clinics from 1,000 EGP. For a type-by-type view in EGP, see our braces price in Egypt by type guide, which helps you check a quote against type.

Clear Aligners vs Braces

A 2019 systematic review of eight studies found that clear aligners and braces were both effective, but aligners were not as effective at producing adequate occlusal contacts, controlling tooth torque and retention. Put simply, complex cases may be better served by braces, and only a clinician who has examined you can say which applies. Asnan KB Dental's Invisalign listing (45,000–95,000 EGP) shows aligner prices can match or exceed fixed braces, so appliance type is not a shortcut to a lower fee.

Retainers After Braces and Relapse

The NHS describes a retainer as a device that stops your teeth moving back to their original position. The Cochrane review of retention after braces, covering 47 studies and 4,377 adults and children with evidence current to April 2022, could not rank one retention approach above another. It notes that teeth can become crooked again after treatment (relapse), and that clear plastic retainers may be more satisfying to patients but less likely to last than Hawley retainers.

Retention is therefore a long-term commitment, not a formality at the final visit. Ask which retainer the clinic uses, what a replacement costs and how long follow-up lasts, and budget for those items alongside the braces fee.

Who May Benefit

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have a first check-up with an orthodontist by age 7 and advises seeing an orthodontist as soon as a problem is noticed. A first visit does not mean treatment starts then. For adults, the duration evidence above does not show older patients finishing slower overall, so age alone is not a reason to rule treatment out. Whether you are a candidate is decided by a clinical examination, not by an article.

Who May Not Be Suitable

The research reviewed here gives no universal exclusion list, and only a clinician who has examined you can say whether you are suitable. The evidence does point to situations where one option fits less well:

  • Complex tooth-movement needs: aligners were less effective than braces at controlling torque and producing occlusal contacts, so these cases may need fixed appliances.
  • Adults with palatally displaced canines: alignment took about 3.8 months longer than in adolescents in the one study that measured it, so a longer plan is realistic.
  • Patients who cannot keep teeth clean around brackets: white spot lesions are common during treatment (see below), so hygiene is part of candidacy.
  • Patients who cannot attend visits every 6 to 8 weeks: a distant clinic makes the schedule harder to keep.

The NHS also advises avoiding hard, crunchy or sticky foods that can break braces. If that is unrealistic for you, say so at the consultation so the orthodontist can plan around it.

Risks and Limitations

White spot lesions (enamel decalcification) are among the best-documented problems. A meta-analysis of 14 studies found them in 68.4% of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, with new lesions forming in 45.8% during treatment. A 2023 systematic review of seven studies (666 patients) put the prevalence at debonding between 12% and 55% and found that regular fluoride varnish during treatment reduced lesions (pooled risk ratio 0.64).

Root resorption is common but mostly mild. A systematic review of eight studies reported incisor root resorption in 65.6% to 98.1% of patients after non-surgical treatment, with mild to moderate severity.

The limits matter as much. Teeth can move back after braces, no retention method has been shown to be superior, and aligners did worse than braces on some measures. No clinic can guarantee a result or a finish date, and the 24.9-month average hides wide variation between cases, so treat any promise of guaranteed results as a warning sign.

When to Seek Medical Help

This is education, not diagnosis. Contact your treating orthodontist, rather than adjusting anything yourself, if a bracket, wire, aligner or retainer breaks or no longer fits. Severe pain, swelling or any symptom that worries you between scheduled visits is a reason to call the clinic and, if it cannot wait, to see a dentist or doctor. For children, the AAO advises seeing an orthodontist as soon as a problem is noticed rather than waiting for the age-7 check-up.

Choosing an Orthodontist in Cairo

Egyptian rules on who may advertise as an orthodontist are not covered here, so treat the following as questions to ask, not rules. Put them to every orthodontist in Cairo you consider:

  • Is the clinician a specialist orthodontist or a general dentist offering braces, and what training do they hold?
  • What does the first consultation cover, and does its fee count toward treatment if you proceed?
  • Which appliance is proposed for your case, why, and what are the alternatives?
  • Which retainer and follow-up policy applies after treatment?

Location deserves a place on the list. WhatClinic's directory groups Cairo orthodontists by popular areas including Zamalek, Giza, Heliopolis, Nasr City, Maadi and Helwan. With visits every 6 to 8 weeks for up to two years, a clinic in your own district can be worth more than a slightly lower fee across the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do braces cost in Cairo?

WhatClinic's Cairo listings, checked October 2026, show fixed braces from 6,000–25,000 EGP at The Teeth Movers to 45,000–65,000 EGP at Asnan KB Dental. The gap is tenfold and the listings do not explain it. Ask each clinic what its fee includes, including retainers and follow-up visits, before you compare quotes.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

A 2020 systematic review puts fixed-appliance treatment at about 24.9 months on average, and the NHS says braces usually stay in place for 1 to 2 years. Individual timelines vary with the case, the clinician and the appliance, so ask your orthodontist for a written estimate for your own teeth.

Are clear aligners as good as braces?

A 2019 systematic review of eight studies found both effective, but aligners were less effective at producing adequate occlusal contacts, controlling tooth torque and retention. Whether aligners suit you depends on your case, which only an orthodontist can judge after examining you. Ask what the alternatives would be.

At what age should a child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first check-up by age 7 and advises seeing an orthodontist as soon as a problem is noticed. A first visit does not mean treatment starts then; the orthodontist decides whether and when to begin, so an early check-up is information gathering, not a commitment.

Do I need a retainer after braces?

A retainer stops teeth moving back to their original position, and Cochrane notes that teeth can become crooked again after braces. The evidence cannot rank one retainer type above another, so ask your orthodontist which one they use, how long to wear it and what a replacement costs.

Can adults get braces?

Adults are treated with fixed appliances, and a meta-analysis found no significant difference in the duration of comprehensive treatment between adults and adolescents, though confidence in that estimate is low. Aligning displaced canines took about 3.8 months longer in adults in one study. An examination decides whether you are a candidate.
