Metal or Clear Braces: Which Suits Your Case in Egypt?
Many people in Egypt ask about the difference between metal and clear braces before they request a quote from a clinic. The sections below set treatment time, results, daily commitment and price in Egyptian pounds side by side, and they show where each type falls short. The final choice stays with your orthodontist after an exam and X-rays.
Metal or Clear Braces: Side-by-Side Comparison
The table summarises what medical sources report. Every figure is an average, not a promise about your own case.
| Criterion | Metal (fixed) braces | Clear aligners |
|---|---|---|
| Overall effectiveness | Effective for correcting bite problems | Also effective, with no statistically significant difference in overall outcome score |
| Treatment time | Usually 1 to 2 years, according to the NHS | About 6.31 months shorter in a 2019 review |
| Difficult movements | Stronger at tooth contacts, root angulation and retention | Less reliable for rotating upper canines and premolars |
| Daily commitment | Fixed in place, so you cannot take them out | Depends on wearing them about 22 hours a day |
| Comfort and quality of life | Larger effect on quality of life, on weak evidence | Smaller effect on quality of life, on weak evidence |
| Price in Egypt (2026 price lists) | EGP 8,000 to 30,000 | EGP 20,000 to 75,000 and above |
In the clear aligners vs metal braces contest, aligners win on treatment time and comfort. Metal braces win on difficult movements and on not depending on your discipline. Overall results are roughly level.
What the Studies Say About Results and Duration
A systematic review published in 2019 pooled eight studies, two of them randomised trials. It found that both appliances work for correcting a poor bite. It found no statistically significant difference in the overall Objective Grading System score. Treatment was shorter with aligners by 6.31 months on average.
The same review judged aligners less effective at producing good contact between upper and lower teeth, controlling root tilt and holding results afterwards. It credited them with an advantage in moving teeth in segments. Those are the areas where metal braces keep the edge.
On comfort, a 2023 review of three studies and 156 patients reported that quality of life was affected less by clear aligners than by fixed metal appliances. The authors rated the evidence low to very low, so do not decide on this finding alone.
Difficult movements are a separate question. A September 2025 review of 12 studies put aligner accuracy for tooth rotation at about 65% on average, within a range of 36% to 85%. Upper canines and premolars were the least reliable, while incisors and molars were more predictable. Nearly all studies carried a moderate or serious risk of bias, so read these numbers cautiously.
Metal vs Clear Braces Cost in Egypt in EGP
Egypt has no single official price list, and published figures vary widely. The table below sets two 2026 price guides side by side. Both are indicative, and neither breaks prices down by clinic.
| Type | EDC Hub (June 2026) | Premia Dental (February 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Metal braces | EGP 8,000 to 20,000 | EGP 12,000 to 30,000 |
| Ceramic braces | EGP 14,000 to 28,000 | EGP 20,000 to 40,000 |
| Clear aligners | EGP 20,000 to 70,000 | EGP 45,000 to 75,000 and above |
EDC Hub is a Cairo dental directory and Premia Dental is a clinic, so both publish these figures on their own websites as price guides and not as official tariffs. EDC Hub also groups clinics by tier for a full course of treatment: budget clinics at EGP 8,000 to 18,000, mid-range specialist clinics at EGP 14,000 to 28,000, and premium or cosmetic centres at EGP 30,000 to 70,000. It adds that popular clinics in Maadi, Nasr City and New Cairo often have waiting lists of two to six weeks. In both guides above, clear aligners cost in Egypt spreads over a wider range than metal braces cost, and the top of the aligner range is more than twice the top of the metal range.
Clinic Listings and Price Factors
Clinic listings show the same spread. Egypt Medical Clinic in Heliopolis lists a clear aligner package on Vezeeta at EGP 40,000, displayed at EGP 20,000 after a 50% discount, with no offer dates on the page (checked November 2026). Vezeeta's own guide says the price changes with the condition of your teeth, the type of appliance, treatment length, the doctor's experience, the clinic's location and extra work such as scaling, root canal treatment or surgery. It gives no EGP price per type.
Ask for a Written Quote
Ask every clinic for a written quote that says what the price covers: X-rays, follow-up visits, changes to the plan and the retainer. EDC Hub says retainers cost an extra EGP 1,500 to 4,000 and warns against very low quotes that leave out the monthly visits. With aligners, also ask what a lost tray costs to replace. For a fuller breakdown by type, see our braces price in Egypt guide.
Daily Commitment: The Practical Test
Clear aligners work only if you commit to them, because you take them out and put them in yourself. A retrospective study of 2,644 adults treated with aligners by a German provider found 36.0% fully compliant, 38.3% fairly compliant and 25.7% poorly compliant. Wearing the tray for at least 22 hours a day was one of the criteria.
The authors note that when compliance is low, treatment times increase and the outcome may be compromised. Metal braces cannot be removed by the patient, but they demand careful cleaning. The NHS advises cleaning between your teeth and under the braces every day with an interdental brush, avoiding hard, crunchy and sticky foods and chewing gum, and wearing a retainer once the braces come off.
Visits differ too. The NHS says fixed braces are adjusted every 6 to 8 weeks. Webteb, an Arabic health site, says a clear aligner set contains 18 to 30 trays, and you swap to the next one about every two weeks.
Verdict: Metal or Clear Braces for Your Case
Neither type wins on every measure. The verdict leans towards clear aligners if shorter treatment matters most to you, because the review put the gap at about 6.31 months and comfort rated better on weak evidence. That holds only if you will really wear them for 22 hours a day. It leans towards metal braces if your case needs difficult movements such as rotating canines and premolars, where aligner accuracy averages about 65%, or if you cannot promise that level of commitment. Price rarely settles the question alone, because the two ranges overlap.
Who May Benefit
Clear aligners may suit you if you are an adult or teenager, can wear them for most of the day, and your case does not depend on rotating canines and premolars. Do not assume you will be among the fully compliant, since only 36.0% were in the study above. Metal braces may suit you if you prefer an appliance that does not rely on a daily decision, or if price is your first concern, because their range is narrower and tops out lower.
Who May Not Be Suitable
Clear aligners may not suit children, since Webteb says they are available only to adults and teenagers. They may also not suit people with severe crowding, which Webteb lists among the cases where aligners are not the right option. If you expect to struggle with daily wear, a fixed appliance may suit you better. If your case needs canines and premolars rotated, your orthodontist may judge fixed braces more suitable.
Risks and Limitations
Most of the evidence above comes from reviews of low certainty, and the averages for treatment time and accuracy may not apply to your case. The prices quoted are published ranges, not binding offers, and their dates and details differ between sources. No type guarantees a specific result. The NHS explains that a retainer stops teeth moving back to their original position, so skipping it puts your result at risk.
When to Seek Medical Help
If a wire or bracket comes loose, or part of a fixed brace hurts, it is reasonable to contact your orthodontist without waiting for the next adjustment. With aligners, call if a tray breaks, goes missing or no longer seats properly on your teeth. Persistent pain or swollen gums may also need a check-up. Next Step
Before you decide, book an assessment with an orthodontist and ask why they recommend one type for your case, along with a written cost quote. Book your appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Are clear aligners faster than metal braces?
On average, yes. A 2019 systematic review found clear aligner treatment about 6.31 months shorter than fixed braces. It pooled only eight studies, though, and noted that aligners can be less effective at some movements. A shorter average does not mean aligners are quicker for your teeth, and your orthodontist decides after examining you.
Do clear aligners cost more than metal braces in Egypt?
Usually, yes. EDC Hub's June 2026 guide lists metal braces at EGP 8,000 to 20,000 and clear aligners at EGP 20,000 to 70,000, while Premia Dental lists EGP 12,000 to 30,000 and EGP 45,000 or more. Guides disagree and none is a quote, so ask for a written offer covering X-rays, visits and the retainer.
Are clear aligners right for every case?
No. A 2025 review found aligner accuracy for rotating teeth averaged about 65%, and upper canines and premolars were the least reliable. Webteb also lists severe crowding among cases where aligners may not suit. An orthodontist should choose the appliance after examining your teeth and reviewing your X-rays.
How many hours a day must you wear clear aligners?
Studies of compliance use at least 22 hours a day as the benchmark. In a 2021 study of 2,644 adults, only 36.0% were fully compliant by that standard. The authors note that low compliance lengthens treatment and can compromise the outcome. Ask your orthodontist for the wear schedule that fits your case.
How much does a retainer cost after braces in Egypt?
EDC Hub's June 2026 guide says retainers cost an extra EGP 1,500 to 4,000 after treatment. Some clinics may include them in the quote, others may not. The NHS says a retainer stops your teeth moving back to their original position, so ask before you start whether the retainer is included in the price.
